Lab-grown, man-made, lab-created, natural, mined diamonds. What do they all mean? Are they all real diamonds, and what is the difference?

Diamonds are the world's most popular and meaningful gemstones because of their unique physical properties of durability and glitter, justifying their use as a symbol of value.

A diamond is still a diamond, regardless of whether it is made in the lab or comes from the earth. Diamonds are made from carbon atoms; under extreme heat conditions, these atoms are then crystalised and form into a diamond. They are considered to be the hardest substance on earth.

Below are some commonly asked questions and answers that will provide you with some clarity on which diamonds are right for you.

What are natural diamonds?

Natural, known as mined diamonds, originated beneath the earth's surface billions of years ago. They are incredibly rare and contain just one element: the purest form of transparent carbon.

Diamonds are formed with immense pressure about 150-200km below the earth's surface and then transported to the earth's surface in volcanoes which are referred to as kimberlites. These are the deposits they search for while mining and can take up to 10 years to find; after that, another ten years before you can determine if there are enough diamonds to be economical.

What are lab-grown diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are purely man-made in two different environments. First, they are more affordable and require much less time to create. They are structurally identical to diamonds mined from the earth. It is also a more innovative, ethical and sustainable way to source diamonds. Likewise, lab-grown diamonds cost 30-60% less than natural diamonds.

How are lab-grown diamonds made?

There are two separate ways to grow a diamond:

  1. HPHT (high pressure- high temperature) is when a seed of diamond is placed in carbon and then put under extremely high pressure and temperature. The carbon melts and then crystallises into a diamond. HPHT diamonds grow in cuboctahedron shape and have 14 growth directions.
  2. CVD (chemical vapour deposition) is a newer technique for growing diamonds. Again, a diamond seed is placed in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gas, and then a diamond is grown. CVD diamonds grow cubic and have one growth direction.

Both of these ways mimic the same natural environment in which earth-mined diamonds are created, using slightly different techniques.

Can you tell the difference between lab & natural diamonds?

Anatomically and chemically, you can not distinguish between a lab-grown diamond and a natural diamond with the naked eye. Therefore, the only way to check if it is lab or natural is by getting a jeweller to look at the diamond with their specialised equipment to detect the minute differences. For example, they would be searching for a laser inscription on the girdle of the diamond, which would determine the origin. Grading agencies follow the same standards for lab and natural diamonds, such as the 4Cs (cut, clarity, colour & carat), indicating no differences between the two.

Should I buy a lab or natural diamond?

Admittedly, the choice between lab-grown or natural diamonds really lies in your own hands. If either you want diamonds to flourish in value or want more affordable and ethical diamonds. However, if you are still unsure, you may book an obligation-free appointment to discuss with us.

Here are a few different ways to measure your ring size. The most accurate way is to go to a jeweller and have them measure your finger or bring in an existing ring. However, if you're not able to do that, you can also measure your finger at home with our Ring Size chart. The easiest way to measure your ring size at home is by using a piece of string or a strip of paper. To do this, wrap the string or paper around your finger. Make sure that it is tight against your skin. Once you have wrapped it around your finger, mark the point where the ends meet and measure the length with a ruler and refer to our chart. Remember with wear the ring will loosen, therefore you want a snug fit over the knuckle.

At Meaden, we provide free ring sizing within New Zealand on every purchase. See our Ready to Wear Rings here.

How exciting it is to get your new piece of jewellery!
Full of sparkle and life, but like all things beautiful, eventually, there will be wear and tear. Although your engagement ring is probably the most valuable thing you will wear, damage may occur from everyday activities. So even though we guarantee our jewellery lasts a lifetime, it needs to be regularly maintained with our helpful tips below.

Inspect and service jewellery

Having your jewellery inspected by a reputable jeweller is highly recommended. A regular check-up will ensure your jewellery is well-maintained and lasts longer. Our master jeweller Gary, recommends 6-monthly inspections of your jewellery to ensure any damages are picked up early, mainly lowering the risk of losing valuable stones. If you make a habit of this, the life of your precious jewels will increase significantly.

Keep your jewellery clean

If your jewellery is inspected regularly, you don't need to consult a professional to have your jewellery cleaned between inspections. However, if your jewellery is dirty, precious metals like silver, gold and platinum, can be cleaned easily by using a little soap and water with a soft toothbrush, then polished off with a soft cloth to bring back its shine.

Jewellery storage

It is vital to ensure that your jewellery pieces are adequately stored, as this will help increase
their life while reducing the need to clean your jewellery often. You should keep them in a dry and cool place, away from direct sunlight and heat. We recommended storing each piece separately, preferably in a soft pouch or a lined jewellery box, to avoid scratches and damage. You can also consider using anti-tarnish strips to prevent oxidation.

Diamond care

Diamonds are considered to be the hardest material on earth. However, as much as they are incredibly durable, they are not indestructible. Care should be taken while wearing your precious diamond as they can crack or chip if hit in a particular manner. Depending on the shape and quality are more prone to such damage.

Pearl care.

They are known to be one of the most valuable additions to a women's jewellery box. However, like any other fine jewellery, pearls must be maintained well to ensure longevity and shine. Store your pearls in a jewellery box when not being worn, and avoid hanging them. Pearls must be cleaned with a soft dry cloth and NOT soap and water, as water can damage the integrity of silk thread. It is also essential to have any pearl jewellery restrung regularly.

Where to avoid wearing your jewellery

It is common knowledge that harsh chemicals can be found in swimming pools. These chemicals can cause severe damage to metal jewellery. We would suggest that you remove all jewellery while swimming. Chlorine will discolour metal and cause it to deteriorate. We recommended avoiding wearing fine jewellery in places where it may be exposed to harsh chemicals, such as swimming pools or when cleaning. It is also a good idea to remove jewellery while doing activities that may cause it to become damaged, such as sports or manual labour. It will help elongate the life of your valuable pieces. If your jewellery got damaged that way, consult with your jeweller to see if it can be restored to its original condition.
